Advertising

In a Nutshell: An advert for Calvin Klein has been banned in the UK after the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) claims the “image's composition placed viewers' focus on the model's body rather than on the clothing being advertised".

How to use this source: This is a good example of the regulation of the advertising industry. The ban was in response to complaints made by consumers who found the advert objectified women.

In this regard, it is also a good exploration of Laura Mulvey’s Male Gaze theory. Despite the clothing being aimed at female consumers, the image - critics argue - is aimed at men, with the purpose of promoting the brand using the ‘sex sells’ marketing technique. Viewers come to associate sex and nudity with the brand, making them more likely to buy it as the feel these things may transfer across to them (i.e. they will meet more sexually attractive women if they buy Calvin Klein products).

Key Information to include: the ad in question featured singer FKA twigs; the ban came after just two complaints; people also complained about ads featuring Kendall Jenner, but these were not found to objectify women.
